According to Professor Aisin-Gioro Ulhicun, the country name is "Grand Central Hulzhi Khitai State" (Chinese:大中央胡里只契丹國, Khitan: Mos Diau-d Kitai Hulʤi Gur), and Hulizhi means "our tribe or people". The meaning and interpretation of the term "Hulizhi" is still not definitive.

Note: Khitan large script characters include polysyllabic characters, so characters may correspond to one or more Chinese characters. For example, the word "Khitan" /kitai/ (契丹), its /kita/ is represented by one character (from the top, down to the 6th character), and the /i/ is represented by the next character (the 7th character).
