(重定向自Who's Who in China 3rd ed.

中国名人录》(英語:Who's Who in China),是《密勒氏评论报》(Millard's Review)與更名後的《中国每周评论》(The China Weekly Review)於1918-1950年間出版的名人录系列作,九度更新緊貼時局,图文并茂介绍中華民國政商人士及專業精英,係研究民国史的外文参考书。系列作並非旨在囊括一切名人,而是尽可能令世界認識中国人[1]

時代背景

1917年6月9日,美國記者汤姆斯·密勒T. F. Millard)在上海创刊《密勒氏评论报》,读者主要是在华外侨、中国政界和知识分子,海外读者亦多,在美国、欧洲和中国有一定的影响力[2]。1919年,《密勒氏评论报》由约翰·比尔·鲍威尔(John Bill Powell)接管,英文名改为《中国每周评论》,其子约翰·威廉·鲍威尔John W. Powell)隨後繼任主編。[3]

編纂取材

鲍威尔父子的信息來自北京和天津的外国人,以及在該報做的调查问卷,受訪者包括商界和科学界,还采访了清华学校校友及从美国归国的人士[4]

在1925年之前,《中国每周评论》已经出版两次《中国名人录》,但主编鲍威尔父子仍然希望继续更新,以囊括最新的中国国内人物变化。1924年9月的第二次直奉战争,直接促使了鲍威尔父子进行第三次改版的延期和出版[1]

1931年,日军入侵中国东北和上海,所以鲍威尔父子在1933年进行了第四版的补充版,囊括了当时抵抗日军的国共军事将领、以及一些著名的佛教僧侣[5]
