该软件不需要电话号码或其他任何个人身份信息就能使用。这在一定程度上有助于用户匿名化[8][9][10]。
用户可以通过该应用发送短信、进行语音和视频通话，发送多媒体、位置、语音频息和文件[11]。用户可以在电脑上使用Threema的网络应用程序[12]，但前提是用户必须在手机上安装Threema且在线。
Threema是由瑞士公司Threema GmbH所开发[13][14]。产品服务器位于瑞士。截至2020年1月，Threema拥有800万用户[15]。截至2019年1月，有3000家公司和组织使用了商业版Threema Work[16]。
