范妮·肯布爾

弗朗西斯·安妮·「范妮」·肯布爾（Frances Anne "Fanny" Kemble；1809年11月27日—1893年1月15日）是一位19世紀英國女演員，也一位廢奴主義者和作家，出版過戲劇、詩歌、回憶錄和遊記。

1829年10月26日，19歲的肯布爾在皇家歌劇院排練了三周就首次登上舞台，飾演《羅密歐與朱麗葉》中的朱麗葉，迅速出名，也讓她的父親挽回了當劇院經理的損失。她扮演過當時所有主要的女性角色，如莎士比亞的女主和《造謠學校》中的蒂澤爾夫人[4][5]。

1834年結婚後曾退出演藝圈，但在和丈夫分居後重返舞台，1849年開始她的第一次美國巡演。她主要表演莎士比亞的經典作品，能演出的劇目達25部。1868年，她再次退出舞台。[6]

婚姻

1834年6月7日，肯布爾嫁給了皮爾斯·米斯·巴特勒（Pierce Mease Butler），她與父親於1832年在美國結識了他的爺爺、美國參議員皮爾斯·巴特勒。巴特勒繼承了他祖父的大量種植園、農場、奴隸。[8]

在他們結婚的最初幾年，巴特勒不願意帶妻子去種植園參觀。在范妮的堅持下，他們在1838年到1839年的冬天到巴特勒島和聖西蒙斯的種植園過冬。范妮經過觀察，寫成《1838年至1839年喬治亞種植園日記》（Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation in 1838–1839），表現出強烈的廢奴主義情緒。

1839年春全家返回費城後，巴特勒威脅肯布爾不要發表任何有關種植園的文章，否則將不讓她見女兒[9]。此外，巴特勒出軌也令她感到痛苦[10]。

兩人婚姻迅速崩潰，肯布爾離開丈夫返回英國。巴特勒在1847年提出離婚[11]。離婚官司打了很久，1849年終於離婚後，巴特勒保留了兩個女兒的監護權。除了短暫探望外，范妮·肯布爾直到女兒們21歲成年後才與她們團聚[12]。

巴特勒揮霍無度，很快花掉了約70萬美元，1859年3月2日至3日出售了他的436名奴隸，免於破產。這場在薩凡納郊外舉行的奴隸大拍賣會是美國歷史上規模最大的一次，被美國記者大幅報道。[13]

創作

肯布爾寫了兩部戲劇：《弗朗西斯一世》（Francis the First；1832年）和《塞維利亞之星》（The Star of Seville；1837 年）。她還出版過一部日記（1835）和一本詩集（1844年）。

1863年美國內戰期間，她出版了《1838年至1839年喬治亞種植園日記》，書中首次使用了「素食主義」一詞。[16]

1840年代與巴特勒分居後，肯布爾前往意大利旅行，寫就《安慰之年》（A Year of Consolation ，1847年）一書。[17]

1863年，肯布爾還出版了一本戲劇集，其中包括大仲馬和弗里德里希·席勒作品的譯本。後來又出版了好幾本回憶錄。

後代

肯布爾的大女兒莎拉·巴特勒（Sarah Butler）嫁給了美國醫生歐文·瓊斯·威斯特 Owen Jones Wister）。他們的獨子歐文·威斯特長大後成為一位受歡迎的美國小說家。

范妮的另一個女兒弗朗西斯（Frances）與英格蘭牧師詹姆斯·利（James Leigh）在喬治亞州相識，1871年結婚，他們的孩子艾麗絲·利（Alice Leigh）於1874年出生。他們曾試圖經營巴特勒家的種植園，但沒賺到錢。1877年，他們離開喬治亞州永久移民英國。弗朗西斯曾在戰後關於奴隸制制度的爭論中為她的父親辯護，出版了《戰後喬治亞種植園的十年》（Ten Years on a Georgian Plantation since the War；1883年），反駁了母親的說法。[12]
