以英語為例,「gulf」一詞(其他語言中的同義同源詞有法語的golfe、德語的Golf、西班牙語、葡萄牙語、意大利語的golfo等)傳統上指被海岸線包圍的大型、蜿蜒、可通航的鹹水體[1]

一般來說,「gulf」比「bay」(其他語言中的同義同源詞有法語的baie、西班牙語的bahía、葡萄牙語的baía、意大利語的baia等)要大[2]。「gulf」與「bay」有時也混用,例如孟加拉灣在英語中為「Bay of Bengal」,但在西班牙語和葡萄牙語中則為「Golfo de Bengala」。在漢語中,「gulf」與「bay」一般均譯作「灣」而不作區分。

許多gulf是主要航運區,如波斯灣(Persian Gulf)、墨西哥灣(Gulf of Mexico)、芬蘭灣(Gulf of Finland)、亞丁灣(Gulf of Aden)等[3]
